Abstract

"Dehumanising the Individual and Undoing the Values in Lukas Bärfuss’ Oil"

This article aims to show the dehumanization of the individual and the dismantlement of values as depicted in Lukas Barfuss’ play, entitled Oil. These processes are inextricably linked with an unbridled lust for money that ultimately leads to tragedy. Starting with a reference to ancient energy and moving through the (post)colonial relations and the knowledge-power dyad, as theorised by Michel Foucault, a possible interpretation of Barfuss’ work is presented.

Justyna Kłopotowska, PhD has been an assistant professor in the Institute of German Language and Literature at the University of Szczecin since 2011. She received her MA in german language and literature at Nicolaus Copernicus University (1997-2002) and PhD in literary studies at Adam Mickiewicz University (2003-2009). She was a visiting scholar in Bamberg (2000/2001), Kiel (2005/2006) and Basel (2006/2007). Her academic interests include: Swiss literature in German, contemporary German and Austrian literature, hermeneutics, transculturalism, drama, theory of drama, and the didacticism of literature.
