Abstract

The subject of this analysis is what the life conditions of farm animals in the Polish People’s Republic looked like and how they were reflected in professional discourse. My main aim is to show how good practices in husbandry were understood before the rise of the notion of animal welfare. As I demonstrate, their evolution was strictly linked with rhetorical changes in the discourse. I delineate the main material-discursive historical shifts that shaped further breeding practices.

Author Biography

Gabriela Jarzębowska, University of Warsaw

Gabriela Jarzębowska – PhD in humanities, researcher concerned with anthropozoology and environmental humanities. Winner of the Preludium 14 grant competition of the National Science Centre (2018); holder of Fulbright scholarship at Wesleyan University (2018–2019); short time visiting scholar at Linköping University and the University of California in Santa Cruz; member of the European Association for Critical Animal Studies (EACAS) and author of many scientific texts published, among other journals, in Journal for Critical Animal Studies, Society & Animals, Teksty Drugie and Praktyka Teoretyczna. She has given guest lectures at Stanford University, Wesleyan University, and the Rachel Carson Centre. Her PhD thesis, Czystka gatunkowa. Tępienie szczurów jako praktyka kulturowa [Species
Cleansing. Extermination of Rats as a Cultural Practice], won the main prize in the ninth edition of the Inka Brodzka-Wald Competition for a doctoral dissertation in the field of humanities dealing with contemporary issues. E-mail: gabriela.jarzebowska@al.uw.edu.pl.
