Animal Minds: between naive anthropomorphism and dogmatic anthropodenial

Abstract

 

The research on animal cognitive capacities is mostly determined by two contrasting methodological attitudes: naive anthropomorphism and dogmatic anthropodenial. The former is defined as fallacious (naive) projecting cognitive, emotional and linguistic capacities of humans on animal world; the latter is denying essential similarities between human being and animals in order to emphasize qualitative differences between these two worlds. Between those attitudes there is some space for putting forward intermediate viewpoints, which include the heuristic value of critical anthropomorphism and indicate those similarities and differences between humans and animals, which deter- mine proanimal moral actions.

Zbigniew Wróblewski – dr hab., prof. KUL, kierownik Katedry Filozofii Przyrody Ożywionej w Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim. Autor monografii naukowej Natura i cele. Dyskusja argumentu teleologicznego na rzecz ochrony przyrody (Lublin 2010); współredaktor (wspólnie z S. Kozłowskim) książki Wokół Mnożnika Cztery (Lublin 2000) i (wspólnie z S. Ziębą) tomu Ekologia a transformacje cywilizacyjne na przełomie wieków (Lublin 2000) oraz redaktor pracy Natura i norma. Kontrowersje filozoficzne (Lublin 2010). Członek komitetu redakcyjnego półrocznika „Człowiek i Przyroda” (1994–2003). Zajmuje się filozofią ekologiczną, etyką środowiskową i praktyczną filozofią przyrody. Jako stypendysta Katholischer Akademischer Ausländer-Dienst przebywał w Instytucie Filozofii Uniwersytetu Technicznego w Darmstadt.
