The article was inspired by problems related to translation of the polysemous French legal
term bien(s) (property) into Polish observed by the author. The term refers, inter alia, to the
concept of res (chose) used by ancient lawyers. The author presents Polish equivalents of bien
suggested in popular bilingual dictionaries and describes the divisions of res, occurring in
both French and Polish law, inherited from Roman law. Next, she compares the broad and
narrow understanding of the term bien(s) with the semantic ranges of its Polish equivalents
(dobra and rzeczy). Finally, the author discusses the erroneous translations of the term
bien(s) into Polish and suggests her own corrections.
