Abstract

Hermes’s Wink. "Numbers" by Olga Tokarczuk or Hermeneutics in Action

In the light of the interpretation presented in this article, “Numbers” (1993) –
one of the first short stories by Olga Tokarczuk – are the literary embodiment of hermeneutic
reflection with the key concepts of trace, mystery and semantic clearance. In her readings
of signs left by the hotel guests, the narrator-maid is the heir to the thought of Dilthey, Gadamer and Derrida, which orders to investigate for the truth about another human being, at the same time agreeing to its inconclusiveness and distraction. For the hermeneutic commentary of the work, the very gesture of its interpretation is also important, as it doubles the protagonist’s procedure and overwrites the metaliterary (and thus metahermeneutic) level of meanings on the basis of a countersignature.
