Abstract

Heidegger and the Mundane Aesthetics of Everyday Things

The article revisits Martin Heidegger’s essay The Origin of the Work of Art, aiming to elaborate on the “down-to-earth” everyday aesthetics of objects of use. I show that usable artifacts can take part in the aesthetic revealing of being although, unlike works of art, they are not directly oriented at it. This concerns the issue of revealing the individuality (uniqueness) of things as independent of their mass production and the transformation of the understanding of the symptoms of destruction as a feature negatively assessed by the consumerist attitude into the dimension of disclosing the being (ownness) of things as entangled in the influence of other beings.
