ER(R)GO nr 9 (2/2004) - hybrid and identity

Er(r)go,
identity and hybridity―the problem which cannot be avoided in the age of mutual interpenetration of once separate realms, of the fuzziness of boundaries and technological interventions into subjectivity, of the danger of “cultural greyout" (Noel Jansen) and instability. Even though the Western tradition has always treated us as hybrids―whether of carnality and spirituality, or form and matter, or of body and mind―such hybridity has been veiled and made invisible by the emphasis on the unity of its components. Now, however, when homogeneity and universal qualities have been sent away to the realm of the exotic, when oxymoron lurks even from within globality, construed as a structure of complex localities (hence the hybrid glocality), “hybridity became the principle determining the textuality of culture" (Ewa Szczęsna). What characterizes a hybrid is that it does not want to succumb to the discourse in which―or perhaps against which―it came into existence, that “it eludes the control of the existing language" (Ewa Szczęsna) or, like a double, “is a part of several different discourses" (Mariusz Jazowski), but does not belong to any of them. We begin to share the experience of an artist, who is able to say: ,,here am I and not-I in one person, a hybrid, on the one hand perceived as an other, and thus a negation of one's own identity, and on the other hand an I existing through the other, who is thus the source of my subjectivity." (Joanna Szymanowska). Equivocality, diversity and fragmentariness affect both individuals and communities; we encounter nations with ,,wavering identities" (Ewa Łukaszyk), whose self-awareness has been formed by anachronic and incommensurable factors. Otherness and sameness coalescing in hybridity are certainly not conducive of our sense of security. A need to define or redefine both the identities of local narrations (Monika Baer) and of the foundations of individual identities becomes more and more strongly felt. These foundations are perhaps best sought for (Magdalena Żardecka-Nowak) in the language of irony and in the ironist's attitude.
