wars for the canon: timeless wisdom or a legitimization of social order? Canon warrants and symbolically represents the imagined unity of a nation and its universal humanist values – such is the military potential of culture. Spivak: „Canons secure institutions to the same degree as institutions secure canons.” Hermeneutics of suspicion and a selective tradition of canon, with a pinch of social justice. Indians reject rationalism and linearity, redefinitions and paradigm changes are thus necessary. Perhaps canon as an intercultural dialogue: a white American, slave narratives and Indians’ ecosystemic, non-anthropocentric vision of the world, and also gender, other races, mixed breeds, diversity, and Jhumpa Lahiri. What about aesthetics? Ethics? Best to replace canon with canon without smoothing out the rough grain of politics and history. Synchronic and diachronic multiplication of canon.

Further on, Różewicz’s exits: beyond collectivism, beyond singularity, beyond avant-garde, out of himself into nothing. Autotelic, indeterminate, elusive Różewicz. Repeated and inconclusive disappearance. Różewicz’s recycling and outrageously young poets. Różewicz as a letter of the poetic alphabet, and a paradoxical rigorist, and a realist, and a moralist, and the destroyer of canons, a wanderer through the spaces of canons reversed. And, at the end of the day, “there is no exit.” There is “poetry of trash dumps.” And is poetry actually edible, or not? Fairy tale registers and the glocalization of fairy tales. Do fairy tales have their canon? Fairy tale narratives and re-narratives. Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White frolic in the canon. Little Red Riding Hood dies and defeats two wolves. Mother-in-law devours the children of the Sleeping Beauty, father forces Cinderella to marry him, little pigeons peck out her stepsisters’ eyes (only one each), Gretel stabs Baba Yaga with a knife and Hansel persuades the giant to cut the throats of his own children, and can become an SS-Mann at last. And ultimately, one can make money on fairy tales.

What is the odour of being? Better not to smell. Cibulka with a bandaged penis – unrestrained creativity. Primal excess, danse macabre, self-aggression, obscenity, iconoclasm, scatology, killing animals. A kick in the butt of perverted dwarves and knödel fight in Vienna. A ban on monogamy. Murder is art: someone butchers a pig in bed. We are looking at a cheap landschaft of a mythical land of happiness with brown past. Orgy as a sacrament of existence. Visual grammar – body as intention, event, result. What of the soul? Do frogs have souls? Does a soul have gender? Aesthetization of a woman, who does not know metaphysics. Women’s sharp minds – ignorance does not lead to salvation. To have time or to live it? 

The spacing of time and the timing of space. The culture of a nanosecond – network as a detemporalized successor of the clock; eternal present; time as a frozen river. And in the knot of the tale, the protagonist can meet himself. How to record a tape for one’s younger self and how to warn it? Rigorous logic in an impossible plot, and the subject – a shuffled pile of photographs. Cliffordian ethics of belief, evidentialism, epistemic audacity, beliefs, meta-beliefs, sub-beliefs, ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat, a mountaineer’s leap over the chasm and the salvation of people on Earth. The canon of computer games; good games need no saving, as they save themselves, poor games should not be saved. Curious: when it becomes part of the canon, a work dies and ceases to exist; a work which does not belong to the canon dies and ceases to exist. Illusions of choice.

The Changing Canon of American Literature
and the Question of American Identity:
Over Half a Century of Debate and Controversy

Abstract: The article discusses the ways in which political and cultural revolution in the 1960s together with such social practices as university open admissions and affirmative action have changed the canon of American literature. It presents the factors that have led to the broadening of the canon and argues that the evolving canon of American literature no longer constructs a teleological meta-narrative of a unified tradition but instead reflects the ways in which multiple traditions and cultures engage in a dialog and influence one another.

Exits: Avant-gardisation as an Incentive to Canonization (the Case of Różewicz the Poet)

Abstract: The article aims at determining the specificity of canonical character of the poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz – one of the most important writers of the Polish literature of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, whose just recently finished work – although there are already numerous studies – is only now subjected to all-embracing summaries. The discussion has been submitted to the concept of continual canonization which corresponds with the diagnosis of multiplicity and dynamism of modern canons as well as conforms with, the basic to the author of Faces of Anxiety, the movement of transgression – constant avant-gardisation, going beyond individual and non-individual norms and established models. The study is divided into four parts corresponding with four aspects of Różewicz's excesses. The first one is a general description of the postulated category of canonical character in the context of the work of the author of Exit; the second one describes a type of avant-garde specific to the author; the third one concerns negative poetics. The fourth part sums up the issue by discussing the newest selection of Różewicz's poetry – Znikanie [Disappearance] edited and commented by Jacek Gutorow, poet and literature scholar. The problem of paradoxical continuation based on variability, poetic tradition, and the strategy of external canonization of the writer will be discussed – through the creation of a new canon of his poems which will be potential, alternative, personal and explicitly submitted to the subject of the sense of writing and the autotelic nature of poetry.

Is Everyone Familiar with Hansel and Gretel?
The Issue of Fairy Tale Canon on the Example of the Fairy Tales from the Kinder- und Hausmärchen Collection 
by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

Abstract: 

The article considers the problems connected with the idea of fairy tale canon, with attention to the fairy tales from the Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales) collection by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Instead of a primary fairy tale or canonical fairy tale, the author proposes a concept of a fairy tale module – an imaginary structure consisting of multiple versions of a single fairy tale which functions in various registers of production and reception (traditional culture, written culture, technological culture). The article also contains a discussion of the fairy tale re-narration based on the contemporary texts of culture which modify those fairy tales and which are well-rooted in collective imagination. The fairy tales basically work as constructs whose shape is determined by other texts of culture and various media (literature, film, comic books, etc.). The article also notes the economic dimension of Grimm’s fairy tales which have been present in culture for over 200 years and which still remain subject to constant changes – the fact particularly apparent in the area of popular culture.

Abstrakt: W artykule podjęto rozważania na temat problemów związanych z pojęciem kanonu baśniowego ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem baśni ze zbioru Wilhelma i Jakuba Grimmów Kinder- und Hausmärchen. Celem tekstu jest przedstawienie propozycji badawczej, która na miejsce baśni pierwotnej czy też baśni kanonicznej proponuje pojęcie wzorca baśniowego – struktury wyobrażeniowej ukształtowanej na podstawie różnych wersji jednej baśni, funkcjonującej w różnych rejestrach nadawczych i odbiorczych (kultura tradycyjna, kultura pisma, kultura technologiczna). Ponadto, w artykule znajduje się omówienie zjawiska baśniowej renarracji na podstawie współczesnych tekstów kultury, które modyfikują doskonale zakorzenione w masowej wyobraźni baśnie. Baśnie funkcjonują przede wszystkim jako konstrukty, na których kształt mają wpływ również inne teksty kultury i różne kanały ich przyswajania (literatura, film, komiks, itd.). W pracy zwrócono również problem na wymiar ekonomiczny baśni Grimmowskich, które obecne są w kulturze już od ponad 200 lat i podlegają ciągłym transformacjom, co szczególnie jest zauważalne w przestrzeni kultury popularnej.

Canon – Ideology and Mechanics
The Question of Canon in Interactive Entertainment

Abstract: The analysis conducted in the paper focuses on the role, the reason, and interpretations of canon in the medium of interactive entertainment. The notion of canon is analysed from two perspectives. In the first part, the author interprets canon as an ideological foundation and investigates the influence of such a structure on the problem of digital preservation. In the second part, the mechanical application of canon (understood as overarching narrative structure) is examined. The discussion focuses on the analysis of attempts at reconciling this fixed structure with the necessity to introduce interactivity, an innate characteristic of the medium in question. The author does not encourage or discourage any attempts to form a video game canon; he is rather interested in the actual results and reasons for forming such constructs. The aim of the analysis is not only to emphasise certain specific circumstances concerning the question of canon in this medium, but also to improve our understanding of the issue of canon in post-modern media.

Women’s Education in the 17th- and 18th-century England

Abstract: The paper focuses on the opinions of two women thinkers: Mary Astell (1666–1731) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759–1797), whose modern views have been influential since the second half of the 20th century. The aim of the paper is to foreground the originality in their way of thinking against the background of philosophical views as well as social and cultural situation in the 17th- and 18th-century England.

Jhumpa Lahiri’s Impossible Canon

Abstract: The article aims at examining the canonical categorization of Jhumpa Lahiri’s works, the trajectory of which makes such a categorization difficult if not impossible to establish. The author also focuses on the positive and negative aspects of the emergence of the ethnic canon in the United States, especially on the political and economic facets of literary production. The analysis begins with the theories by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Edward Said, and Homi Bhabha, and proceeds to a more detailed examination of the ethnic canon by David Palumbo-Liu and Graham Huggan.

Niemożliwy kanon Jhumpy Lahiri

Abstrakt: Ten artykuł ma na celu zbadanie przynależności kanonicznej twórczości Jhumpy Lahiri, której trajektoria służy ukazaniu trudności czy wręcz niemożliwości ustanownienia takowej przynależności.  W swoich rozwazaniach autorka skupia się na pozytywnych i negatywnych skutkach formowania się kanonu literatury etnicznej w Stanach Zjednoczonych ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na uwikłanie owej twórczości w polityczny i ekonomiczny wymiar kultury. W swojej analizie autorka wychodzi od rozważań nad kanonicznością Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Edwarda Saida i Homiego Bhabhy, by skoncentrować się na bardziej szczegółowym spojrzeniu na kanon etniczny, zaproponowanym przez Palumbo-Liu oraz Grahama Huggana. Ważną pozycją w analizie był również zbiór esejów z 2012 roku pod redakcją Laviny Dhingry oraz Floyd Cheung, poświęcony w całości problemowi kanoniczności twórczości Lahiri.

Viennese Actionism: Transgression as an Art of Social Negation

Abstract: An act of creation, as a form of human activity whose aim is to bring new value into the world of art is of processual character. Transgression is one of many possible forms of this process. It is defined as a violent, radical, irreversible act of creation, an emanation of the artist’s freedom which consists in disturbing, transgressing, and breaking social rules, laws, or cultural norms – willfully or not – in order to cause a certain artistic effect whose consequences are unpredictable and remain completely outside of the creator’s control. In the second half of the 20th century, a group of radicals calling themselves Wiener Aktionsgruppe began to dangerously balance on the verge of crime. Art, based on the acts of transgression, acquired a role as a tool of social critique, a total negation of the values represented in the “society of dwarves,” a resistance towards a dysfunctional reality. Aesthetic terrorism was a weapon of provocation, a manifestation of a revolt, an attempt to make any kind of change, or simply a distinct approach to aesthetic value. The paper analyses the creative attitudes of Rudolf Schwarzkogler, Günter Brus, Hermann Nitsch, and Otto Muehl, and the causes and consequences of their transgressions. The author also investigates the evolution of the reception of the Viennese Actionists as an example illustrating the dangerous process of getting accustomed to transgression in the course of a slow assimilation of all artistic extremisms inspired by political interest.

Akcjonizm Wiedeński - transgresja jako sztuka społecznej negacji

Abstrakt: Akt twórczy jako forma aktywności człowieka, której celem jest powstanie wartości, zwykle w świecie sztuki nazwanej dziełem, ma charakter procesualny. Transgresja jest jedną z wielu możliwych postaci tego procesu. Definiowana jako gwałtowny, radykalny, nieodwracalny akt twórczy - emanacja wolności artysty, polegająca na, świadomym lub nie, naruszaniu, przekraczaniu, łamaniu obowiązujących w społeczeństwie zasad, praw, norm kulturowych, celem wywołania określonego efektu artystycznego, którego konsekwencje są nieprzewidywalne i pozostają poza jakąkolwiek kontrolą twórcy. W drugiej połowie dwudziestego wieku grupa radykałów skupionych w Wiener Aktionsgruppe zaczęła niebezpiecznie balansować na granicy zbrodni. Sztuka - oparta na aktach transgresji, wchodziła w rolę narzędzia społecznej krytyki, totalnej negacji wartości reprezentowanych w „społeczeństwie krasnali”, sprzeciwu wobec dysfunkcyjnej rzeczywistości. Estetyczny terroryzm był orężem prowokacji, manifestacją buntu, próbą wprowadzenia jakiejkolwiek zmiany lub po prostu stanowiskiem osobnym. W niniejszej pracy analizuję postawy twórcze Rudolfa Schwarzkoglera, Güntera Brusa, Hermanna Nitscha i Otto Muehla. Przedstawiam przyczyny i skutki podejmowanych przez nich transgresji. Śledzę ewolucję recepcji sztuki Akcjonistów Wiedeńskich, która może być modelowym przykładem ilustrującym niebezpieczny, inspirowany interesem politycznym, proces oswajania transgresji na drodze powolnej asymilacji wszelkich artystycznych ekstremizmów.

“I’m My Own Grandpa”—Spatialization of Time in Michael and Peter Spierig’s Predestination

Abstract: Spatialization of time, that is, presenting time in the categories of space, measuring and rationalizing it, was a very significant social process at the end of the 20th century. The “spatial turn,” as it is called by Fredric Jameson, is connected with a postmodern individual’s immersion in a perpetual present. The separation of the individual from the past and the future, which has resulted in the deconstruction of the subject’s temporality, was caused by the processes characteristic of late capitalism. Spatialization of time in postmodernism expresses the integrity of space and time, the changing relations between them and their new conceptualizations. These changes are reflected in post-classical cinema that is quite often characterized by modular temporality. The plots of those films are divided into spatio-temporal modules whose order is rearranged into a non-chronological syuzhet. Simultaneously, those films depict multifaceted human experience of time and the temporalization of space. Michael and Peter Spierig’s film Predestination (2014) blends the spatialization of time, characteristic of classical cinema, in which space and time are static entities, with post-classical nonlinear arrangement of the plot. Presenting space-time as static modules allows the directors to show subjectivity governed by the categories of space, rather than by the continuity over time. According to David Lewis, the identity of the protagonist, a time traveler, and his/her psychological continuity must be described by means of the differentiation between external time and personal time, because his/her identity relies on operating in spatialized time.

„Jestem swoim własnym dziadkiem” – spacjalizacja czasu w Przeznaczeniu Michaela i Petera Spierig

Abstrakt: Spacjalizacja czasu, czyli przedstawianie czasu w kategoriach przestrzeni, mierzeniu go i racjonalizowaniu, to bardzo ważny proces społeczny końca XX wieku. Zwrot ku przestrzeni, jak nazywa go Fredric Jameson, związany jest z zanurzeniem człowieka postmodernizmu w wiecznej teraźniejszości. Odcięcie jednostki od przeszłości i przyszłości, które doprowadziło do dekonstrukcji temporalności podmiotu, spowodowane zostało przez procesy charakterystyczne dla późnego kapitalizmu. Spacjalizacja czasu w postmodernizmie wyraża integralność czasu i przestrzeni, zmieniające się pomiędzy nimi relacje, a także ich nowe konceptualizacje. Zmiany te odzwierciedlone są w kinie post-klasycznym, które cechuje się niejednokrotnie temporalnością modularną. Fabuła takich filmów podzielona jest na moduły czasoprzestrzeni, których kolejność zostaje przearanżowana w niechronologiczny sjużet. Jednocześnie filmy te przedstawiają psychologiczne niejednorodne doświadczenie czasu ludzkiego oraz temporalizację przestrzeni. Film Michaela i Petera Spierig Przeznaczenie (Predestination, 2014) łączy uprzestrzennienie czasu, charakterystyczne dla filmu klasycznego, gdzie czas i przestrzeń to pasywne wymiary, z post-klasyczną nielinearną organizacją fabuły. Przedstawienie czasoprzestrzeni w formie statycznych modułów pozwala na pokazanie podmiotowości rządzonej nie ciągłością w czasie, ale poprzez kategorie przestrzeni. Zgodnie z wytycznymi Davida Lewisa, tożsamość bohatera – podróżnika w czasie – i jego ciągłość psychologiczna muszą zostać opisane za pomocą rozróżnienia pomiędzy czasem zewnętrznym a osobistym, gdyż tożsamość ta opiera się na operowaniu w uprzestrzennionym czasie.

Shapes of Time: Science – Literature – Reality
(A Reflection upon Sonia Front’s Quantum Consciousness)

Abstract: The article offers a reflection upon Sonia Front’s work oriented towards working out adequate intellectual instrumentarium to address quantum fiction: a phenomenon inspired by the philosophical ramifications of crucial developments in physics in the 20th and 21st centuries. Revolving around her recent monograph titled Shapes of Time in British Twenty-First Century Fiction (2015), the argument of the article aims at shedding light on how Sonia Front arrives at the postulate of a certain order countering chaos within a great hermeneutic circle: w wheel in motion, propelling the constant return from the quantum reality to the reality of discurse, a return in which the overwhelming General impacts the ungraspable Detail and the Detail decides about the shape of the General, the great hologram. Front does it in full awareness of the temporariness of such an order, but despite its transience, she decides to formulate an academic statement, to tell a „truth” about the world, time, and human experience: an experience that inescapably becomes her—and our—share. Presented in such a perspective, quantum consciousness, as postulated by Sonia Front, seems to offer a new promise for the research practice of contemporary scholarship.

By What Right do Ships Sink?
On W. K. Clifford’s The Ethics of Belief

Abstract: The article contains an introduction to the Polish translation of William Kingdon Clifford’s famous essay The Ethics of Belief. It focuses on the Victorian origins of Clifford’s thought and its relations to other major figures of the time. The historical elements are followed by a reconstruction of Clifford’s main points, including his major evidential thesis according to which “it is [morally] wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.” The most fierce critic of Clifford was William James; his arguments are presented and briefly commented upon with regard to their contemporary relevance. Clifford is usually accused of radicalism by uncharitable readers and critics; the article proposes possible defence against such accusations.

Jakim prawem toną statki? 
Rzecz o Etyce przekonań W.K. Clifforda

Abstrakt: Niniejszy artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do lektury polskiego tłumaczenia słynnego eseju Williama Kingdona Clifforda pt. Etyka przekonań. Skupia się on na wiktoriańskich korzeniach jego myśli, a także na określeniu relacji w jakiej ta myśl pozostaje do pewnych innych poglądów prezentowanych przede wszystkim w tradycji nowożytnej filozofii anglosaskiej. Po przedstawieniu wybranych aspektów historycznych następuję rekonstrukcja głównych ewidencjalistycznych tez Clifforda, z których ta najważniejsza (i najsłynniejsza) brzmi: „Zawsze, wszędzie i bez względu na osobę niesłusznie jest żywić przekonania oparte na niedostatecznym świadectwie”. Ponieważ najbardziej zażartym krytykiem tezy Clifforda był William James, to jego argumenty są przede wszystkich omawiane. Prezentacji argumentów tych towarzyszy komentarz, wskazujący na ich współczesne filozoficzne znaczenie. Zważywszy na to, że Clifford jest oskarżany przez nieżyczliwych krytyków (do jakich należał niewątpliwie James) o przesadny radykalizm, w artykule zostają zasugerowane też pewne linie obrony twierdzeń Clifforda.
