Liberature – no typo here, but the book (liber) and freedom (liber, free), freedom of the book (the page, the letter) to create meanings that emerge out of matter, “the Trojan Pegasus of liberature.” B in place of t restores value to a single letter, like the uppercase of God and the lowercase of the devil in “God and devil.”
A category, genre, Genre, or trans-Genre? A hybrid word and hybrid lite-libe-rature: physicality of substance and the semantics of the word pregnant with meanings. Semantics and non-verbality, tangibility and visuality, “total work.” Proto- and liberature: Sterne, Herbert, Mallarmé, Czycz, Johnson, Oulipo, Queneau, Perec, Fajfer, Bazarnik, Nowakowski, Danielewski and others. The altar and Tristram Shandy. One Hunded Billion Poems, Life Instruction Manual, The Miserable, The Lonely Wife, Nondepicting of the World, Sienkiewicz Street, Graze, G(r)aze, Eye Bandage, and others. Interlacing spaces: the space presented, the world presented, the iconic space, the world of letters, of black and white, and all of this in semiospace, where the boundary does not separate but unites, and the temporal order intertwines with the spatial one, linearity with simultaneity, contingency with necessity. Kinetic, dynamic, expanding, temporal typography. But above all, the body of the book, body to be read with sight, hearing and touch. Polytexts, multitexts. Corporality of meaning, the booking of the world, textualization of the (body of) book, the internal structure inscribed into the material shape of the work. Paper and fabric as the skin and bones, shape and form as posture; one needs to cut the pages and reach the golden thread that ties the visible and the invisible texts. Emanations.
Two ontological orders – the intentional and the material – multiply the aporetics of the readerly experience. Reading or living through. Polisensory reading, rather, reception through numerous senses. The end of the Apollonian reader, the end of the Dionysian one – the time of the aleatoric reader, indulgent in aporias. What comes next? The liaison of the art of the word with electronics: literature, liberature, e-literature e-liberature. The interface turn, typographic synesthesias, and us already liberated from the dictatorship of sight. The dictatorship of new technologies, multimedia, new media, virtual reality, technotext, text understood as an instrument? And of course the necessity of “different hermeneutics” – we march from the hermeneutics of the linguistic signs towards the hermeneutics of intermedial, interactive and processed signs. Transmedial liberariness as our daily bread? Fortunately “the book is not yet dead, not everything can be caught in the Net” (Fajfer).
