Abstract

Management is classically defined as taking responsibility. In the era of late neoliberalism, the crisis in management leads one to understand that this fundamental goal is not being achieved by mainstream management. Humanizing management is necessary to restore the balance of managed systems.
This article specifically proposes a historiographical reflection and a dialogue between management and art as viable – and efficient – ways to accomplish this mission. Simultaneously, it offers hope for addressing the crisis in the humanities (as discussed by Lech Witkowski), by moving closer to concrete actions in favor of the Other. In this way, management and the humanities together can tackle the challenges of complex
modernity and generate positive synergistic effects by means of taking responsibility for the future.

Prof. Tomasz Ochinowski is a psychologist and business historian, business consultant, and social skills trainer. He is a practitioner of mentoring activities and the author of the mentoring concept. He is a faculty member of the Management Department at the University of Warsaw, where he leads the Department of Organizational Sociology and Business History. He was awarded the "Trainer of the Year" title by the "Institute for International Research". An expert in the European Commission's committee on local development, he is a researcher in the history of organizations and a creator of international cooperation in this field. He has authored numerous publications on organization and management, entrepreneurship, professional development including coaching and mentoring.

Jerzy Kociatkiewicz is a Professor of Human Resource Management at the Institut Mines-Télécom Business School. His research ranges from examining everyday organizational experiences to analyzing narrative inspirations for managerial and organizational aspirations, including reflections on medieval solutions to alienation. He has recently been published in journals such as the Annals of Tourism Research, Organization Studies, and the Journal of Business Ethics. Together with Zygmunt Bauman, Irena Bauman, and Monika Kostera, he authored Management in a Liquid Modern World. Jerzy Kociatkiewicz is an organizational theorist who conducts research on space, technology, literature, and their connections to organization. He has also taught a wide variety of management courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His specialties include ethnography, narratives, and qualitative research.

Monika Kostera is a Polish sociologist. She is Professor Ordinaria in Management in Poland, holding a titular professorship in economics (2004) and the humanities (2017). She has authored and edited over 50 books in Polish and English and a number of articles published in journals including Organization Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior and British Journal of Management . Her current research interests include the imagination and organizing, disalienation of work, organizational ethnography and organizational and archetypes. Some of her recent books are Management in a Liquid Modern World with Zygmunt Bauman, Irena Bauman and Jerzy Kociatkiewicz (2015, Polity), Occupy Management! (2014, Routledge, see Review by Yiannis Gabriel) and Organizations and Archetypes (2013, Edward Elgar). She also publishes poetry.
