Gender Translation Gap: The Category of Gender as a Factor in the Transfer of (Post)Yugoslavian Literature into German

Abstract

The unequal import of (literary) translations of male and female authors from Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia in German will be critically examined in this article regarding the following three aspects: 1. The gender differences in the quantity of translations; 2. The selection strategies for the translation of female authors, especially in the period from 1992 to 2012 (which mostly covers the period of the Yugoslav wars); 3. The role of female actors in the translatory field. The answers to these questions will show whether in this period one could speak of the “gender translation gap”.

Author Biography

Elena Messner, University of Klagenfurt

ELENA MESSNER | 1983 in Klagenfurt/Celovec geboren, Studium der Komparatistik und Cultural Studies/Kulturwissenschaften in Wien und Aix-en-Provence. Sie forschte und arbeitete im Zuge ihres Doktoratsstudiums mehrere Jahre in Beograd, sowie in Sarajevo und Zagreb und war als Herausgeberin, Übersetzerin, Kulturwissenschaftlerin und Redakteurin tätig. Von 2013—2018 unterrichtete sie an der Germanistik in Aix-en-Provence und Marseille. Sie lehrt regelmäßig an der Universität Klagenfurt (Slawistik) war von 2020—2021 Post-Doc-Stipendiatin an der Universität Wien, und ist derzeit Stipendiatin der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW). Schwerpunkte: (Anti-)Kriegsliteratur, Geschlecht und Krieg, Übersetzungsmarkt, Literarischer Transfer, Transkulturalität, Migrationsliteratur, (post-)jugoslawische Erinnerungskulturen, Literatursoziologie.
