Points of Connection and Separation of the Text and the Play on the Example of Wilde’s and Zadar’s Star-Child

Abstract

Understanding adaptation as a two-way process in which the original medium and the medium of adaptation interact with each other, the paper analyzes the relationship between the fairy tale The Star-Child by Oscar Wilde and the puppet play The Star-Child by the Zadar Puppet Theater, directed and adapted by Milena Dundov. The two works are connected by a series of common elements that they approach and use in some places similarly, but more often differently. The key point of difference, in addition to the differences in the media, is the temporal, spatial and especially social context in which the fairy tale and the puppet show were created. The paper analyzes the similarities and, particularly, the differences between the two works, and attempts to notice the second part of the two-way influence — the adaptation’s influence on the source.

Igor Tretinjak, Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek

IGOR TRETINJAK | PhD, Lecturer, Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek, Croatia. Born in 1977 in Zagreb. Graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb with a Master’s degree in Croatian Language and Literature and Informatics in 2005, and in Theatre and Drama in 2010. Defended his doctoral thesis Visual Aspects of Puppetry for Adult in Croatia from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb in 2021. Since 2014, employed at the Academy of Arts in Osijek, Department of Theatre Arts. He was a head of Croatian part in two Creative Europe projects: All Strings Attached: Pioneers of European Puppetry (2015—2017) and EU Contemporary Puppetry Critical Platform. He participated in several international and national scientific conferences, such as “European Definitions of the Puppet Concept and Professional Puppetry Terminology,” “Hvar Theatre Days,” “The Days of Krleža,” “The Days of Ranko Marinković,” and “The Days of Ivo Brešan.” Author of approximately thirty scientific works, editor-in-chief of a scientific monograph Contemporary Puppetry and Criticism (Osijek, 2022), author of a mo­nographic study The Pinklec Phenomenon: From Ritual to Play: First 30 Years of Pinklec Theatre Troop (Čakovec, 2017), editor of Internet magazines kritikaz.com, contemppuppetry.eu and regional platform Od mali(h) nogu, and editor-in-chief of publications of the Academy for Arts and Culture in Osijek.
