Managing human capital through fear. A controversial path to short-term results

Ludmiła Stemplewska

Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyse and assess the effects of fear in the workplace by the human capital of enterprises and to present a “12-stage model eliminating fear from managing the development of human capital”. Research results confirm that management by fear, although quite often effective in the short term, raises controversy, negative associations and destructive effects. This approach is based on the use of fear, pressure, manipulation and harsh methods to motivate employees to achieve organizational goals or the manager’s private goal. Despite the potential benefits, such as immediate results, pilot studies have shown that the long-term consequences for the company and human capital are negative.
